How to Determine the Quality of the Sheet Metal in Knock Down Bins

To assess the quality of the boards used in knock down bins, a four-step process can be employed: initial visual screening → parameter verification → actual testing → compliance assurance. This method eliminates over 90% of substandard boards without complex equipment, perfectly meeting the actual needs of industrial transportation.

1. Initial Visual Screening

Examine surface details: High-quality boards have a smooth surface without bulges, carbonization points, or cracks, and the texture is uniform without large areas of scars or wormholes; substandard boards will have obvious holes, uneven surfaces, and may even show large areas of peeling or repair marks.

Check cross-section layers: Plywood cross-sections have a tight and distinct lamination structure, without hollow areas, delamination, or blackening; PP siding cross-sections have no obvious impurities or air bubbles, uniform density, and no obvious dent when pressed by hand.

Smell to identify potential problems: Approaching the edge of the board, high-quality boards have only a faint smell of wood or PP raw materials, without a pungent, acidic, or irritating odor; boards with a strong, pungent odor are likely to have inferior adhesives and excessive formaldehyde emissions, and should be eliminated immediately.

2. Core Hard Parameter Verification

Thickness and Tolerance: Measure the plywood at five points (four corners and center) using calipers. The thickness tolerance of qualified plywood should be controlled within ±0.1mm, and the thickness difference within the same batch should not exceed 0.2mm. For standard knock down bins, a plywood thickness of 12-15mm is recommended, and for PP side panels, a thickness of 10-12mm is preferred to ensure basic rigidity.

Moisture Content Control: The moisture content of the plywood must be controlled within the range of 8%-16%, with an export requirement of ≤14%. Excessive moisture content easily leads to mold and deformation during transportation, while insufficient moisture content makes the plywood prone to cracking after the locking mechanism is assembled, directly affecting the service life of the crate.

Splicing Compliance: Strictly comply with BB/T 0040-2007 standard requirements: Panels ≤1200mm in length are not allowed to be spliced; panels 1200-3600mm in length must have at least one splice seam; the width of a single spliced panel must be ≥250mm. This prevents suppliers from arbitrarily splicing panels to save materials, resulting in insufficient box rigidity.

3. Simple Practical Tests to Identify Quality

Water Immersion Test for Adhesive Strength: Take a 10cm x 10cm sample of the panel edge and immerse it in hot water above 70℃ for 2 hours. High-quality panels will not delaminate or peel; inferior panels, using cheap adhesives and with inadequate bonding processes, will show obvious delamination and bulging after immersion for 1 hour.

Scratch and Abrasion Resistance Test: Repeatedly scratch the surface of the panel with a key. High-quality panels show no obvious damage or chipping; inferior panels have a rough surface, and after scratching, the underlying material is exposed and chips off. Even minor bumps during transportation will cause large-scale peeling.

Nail-holding power test: Using an electric screwdriver, self-tapping screws are driven into the edge of the board. After five repeated driving cycles, the screws do not strip or the board cracks, indicating that the internal density of the board meets the standard and that the locking mechanism will not fail even after long-term disassembly and reassembly.

4. Compliance and Qualification Guarantee

Basic Standard Compliance: Plywood must meet the GB/T 9846 qualified product grade, with a warpage ≤2%, ensuring minimal diagonal deviation after assembly and preventing issues such as loose locking mechanisms or widening seams.

Test Report Verification: Suppliers are required to provide third-party test reports with both CMA and CNAS certifications, focusing on confirming indicators such as bond strength, static bending strength, and formaldehyde emission. Verbal claims without proper certification are rejected.

Additional Confirmation for Export Scenarios: Boards used for cross-border transportation must be confirmed to have undergone high-temperature heat treatment, bear the officially recognized IPPC mark, and comply with the ISPM15 international quarantine standard to avoid being returned during customs clearance.
